BILLIE HOLIDAY, you've also seen Audra McDonald portray the legendary Lady Day in the Tony-winning LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL. But have you seen Billie Holiday herself? This two-hour presentation gives you the real Lady Day, telling her amazing story from her childhood in Baltimore and Philadelphia, her recording debut at the age of 18 with Benny Goodman in New York to touring with Count Basie and Artie Shaw in the '30s, the heights of fame and infamy in the 1940s, and even greater, more mature artistry in the 1950s.
Presented on Billie Holiday's actual birthday (106) by the award-winning writer and producer Will Friedwald, columnist for THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, this unique presentation could also be titled THE COMPLETE BILLIE HOLIDAY in that it features all of the extant footage of the legendary artist, starting with first appearance on-screen with Duke Ellington's Orchestra in 1933 (filmed when she was 19), to classic collaborations with Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and Lester Young, as well as rare TV appearances and concert videos from all over the world. Audiences will see Holiday sing all of her signature numbers, including "God Bless The Child," "I loves you porgy," "Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans," "Travelin' Light," and "Strange Fruit."
